This class talked a lot about stereotyping in American Society, and made the students fully aware of the issues that are currently going on in society. Here, I am about to tell you the three most important things I learned throughout the semester and hopefully you can pass this along to whomever you wish. First and foremost, I learned that race is determined by several different things such as: blood, genes, parents, appearance/skin color, and your nationality. I found this extremely significant because not many people in society know exactly how race is determined. They just hear the concept almost every day and just think of it as the word race, but instead, in our class we learned exactly how your own race is determined. The next important thing I learned in class this semester is the talk about white privilege, and how whites are the hierarchy in society. White privilege makes whites feel one of three things. First, it makes white people feel comfortable, that the world was designed for them. Secondly, it makes white people normal. They don’t have to describe themselves as white, unlike every other nationality. Lastly, it equates whites with positive attributes, which entitles beauty, wealth, ability, and even intelligence. White privilege is all about a system of advantages that no other ethnicity can have. The last most important thing I learned in class this semester was the first death penalty that was given out in Texas to white men for killing a different race, occurred recently in 1998. A group of three white men were driving and happened to see an African-American standing outside when they decided to go up to him and beat him to death, for no apparent reason. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that after he was knocked unconscious, but still alive, the white men decided to tie him to their truck and drag him for 3 miles until his body disintegrated. I bet you didn’t know that, did you? The reason that why you didn’t know, is because the media could care less about an African-American getting beat up to death. However, what do you think would happen if it were the opposite way? If three black men were to kill a white man? I certainly believe it would be all over the news, and still talked about in classrooms all over the nation today. The problem is, we still live in a racist society and somehow, this needs to change. It’s not fair to Races other then white who get singled out for no apparent reason. It’s just not fair. Something needs to change now, or the world will never be unified as one. Victorian society Essay How does Arthur Conen Doyle manipulate the conventions of the genre and an audiences expectations and deliver the moral messages that Victorian society would have expected?  The two stories that I have studied, The Man with the twisted lip and the adventure of the Speckled Band are both written by the author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle between the years 1859 1930. They also both feature in the story Sherlock Holmes, along with a side kick, Doctor Watson.  Sherlock Holmes stories were not initially published in books, they were printed in Serial form in the Strand magazine. The Contempory audience at the time would have been familiar with the characters and the story being told from Doctor Watsons point of view, and the way in which the investigations are carried out. The Generic expectations of murder mystery stories is that there would be a villain and a victim, the crime is usually by an aggressive man who has a motive and is violent, short tempered and known as a gold digger. The villain is also expected to be male and clever. The victim is usually a female and is typical of the generic expectations of a murder mystery. She would be vulnerable and an hairness who had money. The detective would not be part of the law and would conduct his investigation in an appropriate manner. The crime is usually atypical and would usually be a weapon and well planned and executed and crime solved by Holmes, and justice is always done, and the person who commits the crime is always punished. The clues and the evidence of the story would be to entertain, following clues and the reader predicting the end. The scene and the setting of the crime would be a quiet place, enclosed and dark. The investigation of the crime would be atypical, it would be how and not who did it and the investigator does the investigation as a hobby. An audience would also expect to find evidence, clues and a motive that leads to an investigation and usually a solution. The investigation and crime would be solved by a detective, with an assistant at his side. The Villains in the two stories appear to be typical of the conventions or expectations of a murderer, a typical murderer in a murder mystery story is male, aggressive, shrine, unpleasant and has something to gain from the death of his victim. In the Adventure of the Speckled band the villain is Dr. Roylott, uncle to the first victim. Helen Stoner who was his stepfather and stood out to Doctor Roylott as her mother was well off so Helen stood to inherit money which made her a target for Doctor Roylott. Helen Stoner describes Doctor Roylott as Uncontrollable in his anger, this makes the reader think that he is frightening to this because she doesnt know how he will react at any particular time. Through Watsons narration of Roylott, Conan Doyle creates an image of a wild animal, a hunter, a savage beast. Roylott is described as a fierce old bird of prey and on leaving the apartments, he snarled at Holmes at Watson like a vicious dog. In the man with the twisted lip the villain is Hugh Boon, whom the author describes him as having a bull dog chin which makes the reader believe that he is dog like, savage and vicious. He is a typical villain with a violent and rough past, he seams unreal with inhuman features. The quotes like bile shot eye gives the reader the impression that he is very angry and furious. Thoughout the story Boon is described as a perputial snarl by Doctor Watson, a old Scar by Watson and repulsive ugliness by Doctor Watson. The writer was subverting our generic expectations because we do not expect to know who the villain is at the start, however, the writer conforms our generic expectations because of the setting, the motives and the murder method. In The Adventure of the speckled band the victim is Helen Stoner, step daughter of Dr Roylott. Her mother was quite well off so Helen stood to inherit money income of à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½250 which made her a ideal target for her stepfather. In the man with the twisted lip Neville St Clare, who was an atypical victim was the apparent victim. He was an atypical victim because of the financial gain. Neville St Clare was also a villain, and he wanted to cover this up, he was saw in a window looking very agitated. The crime and investigation in both stories subverts the generic expectations. In The Adventure of the speckled band the investigation is atypical because Holmes in investigating how not who. There is no weapon in the crime, its a snake which does the damage and subverts the generic expectations, so its atypical to the generic expectations. In The Man with the Twisted Lip, there is no crime committed even though it is a murder mystery. Sherlock Holmes investigates the mystery and finds the villain was the victim. The detectives in both stories are atypical because Holmes does it for a hobby, the enjoyment and mental stimulation. In the end, Neville St. Clare was barred from begging ever again and Doctor Roylott was hoist by his own petard.  In Conclusion, I think that these two stories are both typical in the majority of the ways in a murder mystery genre because they both adhere to the generic expectations of a murder, detective story.

This money should be used in new housing and road development. To what extent do you agree or disagree?There currently exists a hot debate over whether a large proportion of government expenses should be allocated to restore historical architecture or be invested in constructing new houses and roads. From my personal point of view, spending on new housing and road improvement has a far greater value between the two and its budget allocation is necessary. A primary reason that sufficient funding should be provided towards building houses and roads is that the employment provided by such public works may relieve the financial burden of working families.For one thing, new housing and road projects may initially require tremendous amounts of labor and materials, thus creating various Job opportunities for engineers, truck drivers and electricians, among others. Once the projects are completed, ongoing maintenance work would need to be overfed in the new areas. Filling these vacancies would generate income for workers and thus ease the burden of living for many households. Moreover, reallocating the budget to make progress on new homes and better roads may enhance productivity in the economy.Advanced basic infrastructure, road systems in particular, would establish an effective transport network. If the government were to withdraw funds from restorations and designate a higher percentage of expenditure to achieve well-maintained roads, traffic Jams could be reduced or even been eliminated to some extent. As a result, residents, consciousness and officials may waste less time on the road, which allows extra hours for other economic activities.There is no doubt that restoring traditional buildings to their original form can stimulate the economy through the tourist industry. Examples of cultural heritage that are well preserved may attract visitors from other parts of the world and lead to profits in travel agencies, souvenir stores and hospitality companies. I have decided to estimate the population parameters for sentence length in 2 different genres of books. I have chosen a horror book and a drama book to see how sentence length varies between them. In theory I would expect the horror book to have much shorter sentences to add suspense whilst I would expect the drama to have longer more descriptive sentences. Method: As it would be too time consuming to record the sentence length for the whole population (the whole book). I am going to use sampling. To try and avoid any bias I will use the random number function on a calculator to find a page in the book and then I will record the length of the first full sentence. I will take a 100 samples for each book as this is enough that I will be able to gain accurate estimates for the population parameters but not use too much time. If by chance 2 the random number function produces a number that has already been used I will simply take the length of the second sentence on that page. The Central Limit Theorem Because I dont know anything about how the population is distributed I have to use the Central Limit Theorem. Even if you dont know how the parent population is distributed the central limit theorem allows you to make predictions as to the distribution of the sample means. I have work out the median of the horror book to be 11 and the drama book to be 12. I have also found the lower quartiles to be at 7 for the horror book and 8 for the drama book whilst the upper quartiles are 19 for the drama book and 20 for the horror book. This tells me that the data for the horror book appears to be more spread out so I would therefore expect it to have a larger variance. Having found the mean of the samples I can say using the central limit theorem that the population means are the same. So the mean sentence length for horror books is 14.15 words and the mean sentence length for drama books is 14.3 words. However the variance obtained for the sample is not the same as that for the population it is a biased estimator. This means the mean of its distribution is not equal to the population value it is estimating. To obtain an unbiased estimator for the variance of the population we can use the formula We can see that this didnt really have that bigger affect on the variance because the value for n was quite large and so n / n-1 was almost 1. In order to calculate the accuracy of your value for the sample mean you can calculate the Standard Error (s.e.). This is the standard deviation of the sample means. This is found using the below formula. We can see that the s.e. for the horror book was 0.937 and for the drama book it was 0.891. This standard error is quite small so I can be quite confident that the actual mean of the populations is equal to that of the sample. A better way of showing how confident I can be in my approximations is to use confidence intervals. Confidence intervals allow you to give a percentage value to how confident you can be that the mean of the population is within certain values. The central limit theorem says that the sample mean is distributed normally when a large enough sample is taken and that the sample mean is equal to the population mean. This means that we can use the tables for the normal function to find out how confident we can be that the population mean is within a certain range. For example when 68% of the graph is shaded (below) we can use the normal tables to work out that the population mean is within + or 1 s.e. of the sample mean. So if you took a sample you could be 68% confident the sample mean was within + or 1 s.e. of the population mean. This can be written as the inequality: However because we dont know the value of we must rearrange this to form the inequality: I am going to use this to calculate 90%, 95% and 99% confidence intervals. The confidence intervals I calculated for the horror book were And for the drama book they were Although this supports my prediction that horror books would have less word per sentence I am not actually that confident in this conclusion. This is due to the fact that the confidence intervals for 99% have a large range of 4.84 words for horror books and 3.49 words for the drama book. This means that the actual population mean could be quite different to the sample mean I calculated and so it could be that the population mean for the drama book was actually more than that of the horror book. I also found that that the variance for the horror book was greater than that of the drama book. This is probably because a drama book is likely to keep the same style of writing throughout the book with roughly the same sentence length whereas a horror book is likely to contain parts where there is suspense and the sentences are short and parts where there is description and the sentences are much longer. One of the problems with my findings was that the calculated as means were not whole num ber. It is impossible to have fractions of a word so if you actually round the means to the nearest whole word they are exactly the same at 14. There were a number of limitations with this investigation firstly if I couldnt be that confident that the mean I obtained was that accurate if I wanted to be more accurate I would have to take a lot more samples. For example if I wanted to be 99% sure that the sample mean was within 0.1 of a word of the population mean I would have to take over 58,000 samples (see below) for the horror book and over 52,000 samples for the drama book. Obviously this is highly impractical but it shows how inaccurate my estimate is due to the fact that I took so few samples. Also I only sampled 1 book from each genre so it is difficult for me to accurately say that all books from these genres will be the same. It is possible that different authors with different writing styles will produce different sentence lengths. For example another horror writer may use longer sentences whilst another drama writer might use shorter sentences. So if I was to extend this investigation I would firstly take more samples to ensure greater accuracy which would therefore allow greater certainty in any conclusions drawn. Secondly I would compare a number of different horror books against each other to see if their population parameters were similar or if they varied. Another progression could be to sample a number of horror books by the same author to see if they are at all similar in their population parameters.
